Weird: Because Normal Isn’t Working [Book Review & Summary]

I recently read a book entitled, Weird: Because Normal Isn’t Working by author and pastor Craig Groeschel, and I absolutely could not put the book down because it was SO GOOD!

I had read two other books by pastor Craig, so I was pretty stoked to read this one. (Going All The Way: Preparing for a Marriage that Goes the Distance and The Christian Atheist: Believing in God but Living as If He Doesn’t Exist. Both books are super good!)

His recent book, Weird: Because Normal Isn’t Working, is one of the best books I’ve read so far. It is incredibly relevant, practical, personal, hilarious, and inspiring. Full of stories, wisdom, and humor, Weird will make you reflect on your life and faith, and cause you to think about the direction your life is headed in (as well as making you laugh hysterically!) 

Convinced that normal people are overwhelmed, exhausted, stressed, overworked, unhappy, and always trying to please the status quo, Groeschel shows us that Jesus’ ways are not only countercultural and weird, but that they’re also the right and best ways to live.

The book is centered on Matthew 7:13-14, where Jesus says: “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

With this verse as the vocal point of the book, Groeschel makes the argument that the normal way of living isn’t working, and that the best way (and godly way) to live is the “Weird” way: a life lived according to the teachings of Christ.

Walking through five areas of life – Time, Money, Relationships, Sex, & Values – Groeschel explains how to pattern these areas of our lives after the ways of Jesus (Which will result in us being weird and, consequently, more fulfilled and happy).

The book is one of the best books I’ve read so far, and I HIGHLY recommend anyone read it. You will laugh, think, and be inspired to get weird, in the best, most godly, kind of way. (And you will love every minute of it!)
