Most of us are aware of the future, but we do very little to plan or prepare for it. We know that in three months from now, life is going to be (most likely, and hopefully) still going on, but too often we act so casual and indifferent to the kind of people we are becoming and the lives we are living.
What are we doing now to prepare for then?
When I was in college, I knew that graduation was eventually going to come whether I wanted it to or not. So I began to think about life after college, the person I wanted to be, and what I wanted to be doing after graduation.
After I graduate in May, what kind of person do I want to be? What work do I want to be doing? – were the questions I’d ask myself.
I discovered that I really wanted to do business and help people through business (a journey I am still on), and therefore, needed to develop some skills in order to be employable. So, I began reading, learning, talking to people, and developing the skills necessary to get the kind of job I wanted after graduation.
I also realized that I wanted to develop better habits – like exercising and being more intentional with friendships – along with developing some practical skills like cooking. So I began working on those as well.
I knew that once college was done, I was going to be living on my own somewhere. I wanted to be able to take care of myself and work at a job I actually cared about.
I knew that then would eventually be the now, and so I wanted to be ready for its arrival.
And thankfully, after graduation, I was prepared and ready to thrive. I wasn’t afraid to move across the country or start my new job (one that I really enjoy), because I had prepared for this time beforehand.
Ask yourself: Who/what do I want to be in three months? In one year? In 5 years? And how am I preparing for the future in the present? What can I do now to be ready for, and achieve my goals in, the future?
The key is to begin now.
Don’t sit around and expect stuff to just happen. Go out and make it happen. Don’t let the future sneak up on you; be ready for its arrival.
Prepare for life then, in the here and now.
So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

What are you doing now to prepare for life in three months? Will you be ready to thrive when the time arrives?
